Japan: DCM and Kanseki Form Capital and Business Alliance.

DCM Holdings (HD), one of the major home improvement retailers in Japan, announced on July 12 that it will form a capital and business alliance with Kanseki, which mainly operates home improvement stores in the prefecture of Tochigi, Japan.

DCMHD plans to acquire 6.8% of Kanseki's voting rights by subscribing to a third-party allotment of treasury stock. The amount of acquisition is approximately 900 million yen.

DCMHD was established in 2006 through the merger of Kama, Daiki, and Homac, and has expanded through active mergers and acquisitions, including making Sanwado and Kuroganeya wholly owned subsidiaries in 2003 and 2004, respectively, and currently operates 670 stores in 37 prefectures.

However, the company has not opened any stores in Tochigi Prefecture, and has chosen Kanseki, which operates stores in the main trade area of Tochigi Prefecture, as its partner. The company hopes to expand its customer base by supplying private-brand products to Kanseki.

Sweden: Byggmax Sales Remain at High Level in 2nd Quarter.

Byggmax, the DIY and building materials retailer active in Scandinavia, has seen a decrease in sales in Q2 2022 compared to Q2 2021.

According to the company's interim report, net sales between April and June 2022 were SEK 2,546 mio (approximately EUR 240.4 mio). This was 10.1 per cent lower than in the previous year, when net sales in the same period were SEK 2,833 mio. Compared with the same period in 2019, however, net sales in the second quarter of 2022 were still 42 per cent higher.

As reported in a statement by Mattias Ankarberg, president and CEO of Byggmax: "Byggmax Group continued to develop well during the second quarter of the year. Sales and profitability were at a historically very high level, only beaten by the exceptional second quarters during the covid pandemic. In the current market situation, with a more hesitant and particularly more price-conscious consumer, we benefit strongly from our discount position. During the second quarter we set new sales records for both several prioritised product categories and e-commerce, while we continued to take market share."
