BIR World Recycling Convention forced to go fully online due to pandemic, offering virtual networking opportunities

Dear fellow members,

Despite all our efforts and best intentions to offer you a “physical” World Recycling Convention this October in Brussels, I must now confirm that a face-to-face meeting is not possible.

Current COVID-19 regulations in Belgium compromise Brussels as event venue and numerous countries are implementing strict quarantine measures and travel restrictions, which prevent BIR members to travel safely to the meeting during the pandemic.

A safe and successful BIR Convention for all concerned - that was our first priority. Due to the still unforeseeable circumstances, this objective is unfortunately no longer feasible. We absolutely want to ensure that attendees, sponsors and exhibitors should not be exposed to potential health risks when maintaining a physical event.

Therefore, we will be offering a virtual World Recycling Convention, starting on 12 and 13 October with general cross-commodity sessions of overarching interest to the recycling community such as Spotlight on Global Trade and a Worldwide Outlook on Economic Developments and Financial Markets. These sessions will be immediately followed by commodity webinars as organised during our first Global eForum, and we are planning to offer networking tools that will allow participants to connect and do business with each other - this is a new service compared to the Global eForum in June 2020.

The BIR secretariat will be circulating more in-depth information on the event format, convention programme and conditions for participation in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your understanding, we count on you to make this virtual convention a full success.

Tom Bird
BIR President

BIR World Recycling Conventions are back!!

BIR confirms
World Recycling Convention – “Special edition”:
Venue change from Istanbul to Brussels
Dates: 12-13 October 2020 – New innovative format

We at BIR stay committed to providing a forum for networking and business exchange because we know how important our events are for our members. Therefore, we are proud to announce that we will maintain our World Recycling Convention scheduled for October 2020.

While the COVID situation is easing up in Europe, other countries remain in the firm grip of the pandemic. We have therefore decided to choose Brussels as convention destination because it is an easy and reliable option in terms of accessibility and flexibility with regards to event venues and hotels.

We will nevertheless keep our promise to meet in Istanbul for one of our future conventions, quite probably in May 2022.

For the upcoming event in Brussels, we want to offer our members an innovative and dynamic 1,5-day event with a strong focus on networking and business exchange. Commodity sessions will be held in a slightly different format to allow a concise overview of the markets while leaving the emphasis on physical trading. There will also be a small exhibition of equipment and service providers.

We recommend that you pre-register early because we may not be able to accommodate all requests. Registrations will be open soon on our BIR website. All delegates who registered for Istanbul will have an automatic pre-registration for Brussels (or can contact the BIR secretariat for cancellation).

Also, be reassured that all relevant health and safety regulations will be applied to ensure that our attendees stay in good health.

In the coming weeks we will inform our members on the event programme and selected venue here in Brussels.

We are so much looking forward to seeing everybody again and welcoming you back to the home town of your BIR secretariat!
